Skins, Socks or Sleeves?

Skins can be attached to not only mobile phone devices but also game consoles and Wii handsets. They’re a fun and cheap way to personalize your technology.

Mobile phone shops such as O2, sell a wide array of phone skins and socks. The phone socks are quite popular with younger people because they are normally designed with smiley faces and cartoon characters. They are more of a decorative accessory rather than a phone protection because they hardly provide any support.

If you want protection, skins are more hard wearing and tough than a phone sock. Skins vary in style, shape and material. Many popular skins are the rubber or gel cases which cover the back of the phone and around the tip of the screen. They are water resistant and form a good bounce barrier if a phone is dropped as it absorbs the vibration easily. The only downside to these are that they can be ripped and it sometimes acts as a dust magnet.

However, other skins include hard shells, normally made from plastic and also cover the back of the phone. They are less likely to get damaged but they are much more bulky and a long drop could crack them. Hard shells seem to come with more variety of designs. Everything from plain colors to sequins and TV character themes.

Alternatively, phone sleeves are an effective way of keeping your device safe. For those with a sweet tooth, you can buy a pouch which looks like a half eaten bar of chocolate.

Stick on transfers are also a variation of skin, typically designed for the front of a device to decorate the keypad. A skin for the Nintendo DS for example, has a design on the control panel with holes cut out for the buttons. They are almost always game related designs such as Mario or Zelda. Similar designs have been made for the Wii handsets, so while you play Mario for example, you can have a matching cell phone skin as well.

Decal skins are also available for your Apple mobile, you can apply a sticker over the back and front or top of the device. Popular patterns include anything sports themed, cartoon themed or simply any unique cool design.

This is one of the few iPhone 4 accessories which boys can get away with, as long as they don’t use a Princess Peach Mario character that is.

Chocolate Bar iPhone 4 Sleeve

If you’re looking for something off the wall and totally unique, have a look at the chocolate bar iPhone 4 case from Etsy seller Cool Beans 717. The case is a sleeve slip on which means you just slip your cell phone in and go.

This type of case is great for those who like simplicity with some originality. And it doesn’t get any more original than the chocolate bar iPhone 4 case pictured above. The case itself is made of a neoprene material on the outside and a soft nylon padding on the inside.

Looks like a Hershey’s chocolate bar to me. How about you?

eco friendly iphone 4 covers from colcasac

I sent an email to ColcaSac, the creators of eco friendly iPhone covers to see if their line is compatible with the new iPhone 4, and below is their response.

Missy,

Our iPhone sleeves should still be compatible with the new iPhone 4, we haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but there isn’t a significant difference in size.  Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Suzy

Good to know! Thanks go out to (Suzy) for the speedy reply.

Essentially their cases and covers are sustainably made, but are not ugly or boring. Sometimes eco isn’t exactly fashion forward, but the design and fabrics used by Colcasac are definitely stylish. Have a look!
